Catalonia, a European country.

Catalonia may be small in size, but this country has a long and cherished history that spans more than a thousand years and has its oen culture and language that have defined its character. The origins of Catalonia as a geographical, linguistic and territorial unit date back to the Middle Ages.

Situated in the North East of the Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia has more than seven million inhabitants and has a surface area of 31,980 km2, which makes it comparable in size to Belgium, the Netherlands or Switzerland. Throughout the centuries, the Catalan nation has enjoyed various degrees of sovereignty protected by the political institutions and various forms of government of the different periods of history. Today, the ruling body in Catalonia is the generalitat, Catalonia's self-governing institution that includes the President, the Government and the Parliament-one of the osdest in Europe. These institutions are governed by Statute of Autonomy and share political power with the institutions of the Sapnish State.
